At Gripsholm Castle, there is a remarkable collection of furniture and handicrafts from four centuries. The castle was built in the 16th century on the initiative of Gustav Vasa. The castle’s most famous 16th-century room is Duke Charles’s chamber, which is one of the country’s most well-preserved interiors from this era. During the Great Power era, significant renovations and extensions were made at the behest of Queen Hedvig Eleonora.
Among the attractions is one of Europe’s most well-preserved 18th-century theaters, which Gustav III had furnished in one of the castle’s round Renaissance towers.
Gripsholm Castle is also internationally known for its large portrait collection – the Swedish State Portrait Collection – featuring portraits of prominent individuals from the days of Gustav Vasa up to our own time. Opportunities to see the castle’s interiors are mainly provided during the summer months, through self-guided tours or guided tours. Booked groups are welcomed year-round.
