Öster Malma – A Castle with Its Own Wildlife Park
Just outside Nyköping lies Öster Malma, a castle that proudly boasts its very own wildlife park. With hunting and wildlife conservation at its core, it’s no surprise that the castle is owned by the Swedish Hunters’ Association. But it’s not just hunters who enjoy the good life here—guests of all kinds are welcome to eat well and sleep soundly.
The majestic Baroque castle of Öster Malma is beautifully situated on the shores of Lake Malmasjön, surrounded by fields and forest. As you drive up toward the castle, any sense of stress seems to melt away. Out on the meadows, grazing deer offer a warm welcome to the peaceful Sörmland countryside.
A Historic Estate in the Heart of Nature
Öster Malma is a historic manor with roots dating back to the 17th century. The castle built here is now one of Sweden’s best-preserved Baroque castles. Inside, visitors are greeted by rows of hunting trophies from former owners and beautiful paintings. Over the centuries, royalty and noble families have resided within these walls. Today, the Swedish Hunters’ Association has its headquarters and training center here.
Get Close to Nordic Wildlife
At Öster Malma’s Wildlife Park, you’ll experience the animals of the Swedish forest up close. In large enclosures, moose, fallow deer, mouflon sheep, and wild boar roam freely in their natural habitats. Walking trails wind through the park, with informative signs about each species. Guided tours are available on weekends (Saturday & Sunday) at 10:00 AM, coinciding with the animals’ feeding time.

You’re also welcome to ask the animal keepers questions as they move about the park. When possible, they share updates and highlight special moments during the day—like feeding times or animal activity.
Explore the Great Outdoors
Surrounding the castle are both short and long hiking trails, ideal for walking, running, or cycling. For those wanting to explore Lake Malmasjön, canoes are available for rent. At Öster Malma, nature is always close at hand.
Enjoy flavors from the Sörmland forest
At the restaurant Jägaren, game meat and fish from the lands around Öster Malma are served. All ingredients are carefully selected and the chefs are inspired by the flavors of the forest. Game lunch is served Tuesday to Saturday. It is a two-course buffet where one of the dishes always includes game meat. Soup, salad buffet, and coffee after the meal are included. The beautiful view is included as well.
Restaurant Jägaren – À la Carte Summer Menu
Restaurant Jägaren, with its lovely dining room and outdoor terrace, offers a true taste of summer in Sörmland. The menu is inspired by the surrounding forests and lakes, with a strong focus on wild game and locally sourced ingredients. Enjoy a hearty summer menu served from lunch through dinner – no need to worry about specific mealtimes, as the restaurant is open all day, even on Sundays!
