The beautiful cathedral, dating back to the 13th century, is a dominant building in Strängnäs.
The oldest part of the church, the so-called core church, began construction around 1250. Over the centuries until the end of the Middle Ages, the church was expanded with side chapels, choir, and the high and mighty tower.
Among the church’s foremost attractions are the high choir’s two altar cabinets, made in Brussels and donated by Bishop Rogge. In the high choir stands Carl IX’s tomb monument crowned by a horse and rider in gilded copper armor. In the sacristy, there is an opportunity to see Carl IX’s burial regalia.
One of the church’s most notable memorials is the reclining statue of Princess Isabella, daughter of John III, who was born and died in captivity at Gripsholm Castle.
Strängnäs Cathedral is surrounded by several narrow cobblestone alleyways and old buildings in a historic setting.
