Experience Unique Architecture in Nature – Arknat Comes to Sörmlandsleden

By the summer of 2025, Sörmlandsleden will feature three new attractions in the form of architect-designed shelters, designed and built by Scandinavian architecture students through the project Arknat. In Katrineholm, Oxelösund, and Nyköping, these creative structures will become part of nature – and a new reason to venture out on a hike in the Sörmland landscape.

What is Arknat?

Arknat is a Nordic initiative where architecture meets nature. During a two-week workshop, architecture students have the chance to design and build functional and artistic shelters that integrate into the surroundings. The aim is to create accessible, sustainable, and inspiring places along popular hiking trails.

Three Places to Discover – and Spend the Night

In Oxelösund, the wind shelter will be built at Västra Femöre – an area where the archipelago landscape takes center stage. Here, sea meets cliffs, forest blends with open views. The Sörmland Trail passes through the area, and there are several fire pits, outhouses, and parking available. Västra Femöre is a perfect spot for a day trip or an overnight stay all year round, offering close proximity to both nature and the sea.

In Nyköping, the wind shelter will be constructed at Örstigsnäs Skans, a coastal nature area where twisted pine trees frame sandy beaches. Here, you’re in direct contact with the sea, and nearby you’ll find the popular Näsudden swimming area. The area offers fire pits, outhouses, and parking – a perfect place to stop, rest, and enjoy the tranquility by the water.

In Katrineholm, the wind shelter will be built at Fagerö, a scenic area inviting outdoor life and peaceful moments. Here you’ll be greeted by a Sörmland forest idyll and varied terrain – a perfect starting point for both short walks and longer hikes.

Sörmlandsleden – a trail for all senses

With its over 1,000 km of hiking trails, Sörmlandsleden is one of Sweden’s most appreciated trails for outdoor activities. Here you walk through enchanting forests, along sparkling lakes, and out to the coast, with many rest areas, overnight accommodations, and nature-related attractions along the way. The trail is well-marked and easy to reach from major cities like Stockholm, making it a perfect destination for both a weekend getaway or a longer hike.

A New Way to Experience Nature

The wind shelters will be completed in July 2025 and open to everyone. They offer protection from the elements, but also a chance to experience how sustainable architecture can harmonize with the Swedish landscape. For hikers, nature photographers, families, and curious visitors, this is a perfect opportunity to discover something new along the Sörmland Trail.
