Overlooking Lake Hjälmaren lies the beautiful Stora Sundby Castle, like something out of a fairy tale. On the grounds, there is a café and a deer enclosure. The castle’s long history dates back to the Middle Ages.
The estate has a long history that stretches back to the Middle Ages. The impressive castle by the waters of Hjälmaren was a dream of a romantic knight’s castle that became a reality. The castle began to be built as early as the 1400s and has been rebuilt and extended in stages. The castle received its current appearance in 1848 with four large towers symbolizing the seasons, 12 small towers for the months, 52 rooms for the weeks, and 365 windows for the days. The castle is now used as a private residence. During the summer, it is possible to book a tour of the castle.<p>
The summer café welcomes you to have a coffee by the yellow buildings in front of the castle in the estate’s old Orangery. Here you have a beautiful view over Hjälmaren in lush greenery. Enjoy pastries and something nice to drink. The castle café is open in the summertime. For opening hours, see the castle’s website via the link below.
The farm shop at the castle parking lot sells locally produced raw materials from the area and surrounding regions, as well as game meat from the estate.
Enjoy the beautiful surroundings at Stora Sundby or take a walk in the park. Here you can, among other things, see a well-preserved runestone, admire and smell the roses in the castle garden, see the old castle ruin, or look for the animals in the deer enclosure. The park is open year-round for visitors between 10 am to 6 pm, with a voluntary entrance fee of 20 SEK.
Next to the castle, there is a wildlife enclosure built around the oak park at the castle where fallow deer and mouflon sheep maintain the cultural landscape open.
