Brannäs Wetland is located on a peninsula in Örsbaken, between Oxelösund and Nyköping. The wetland was established in 1993 in an area of low-lying forest and old farmland and is the first full-scale facility of its kind in Scandinavia. Today, it serves as a third stage in wastewater purification. What no one could have predicted when the wetland was established is the rich birdlife and the great natural value that the wetland would come to provide.
To give the public easy access to this biodiversity offered by the wetland, there is a walking trail approximately two kilometers long that takes hikers all the way to the wetland’s outlet into the Baltic Sea. Along the trail, there are information signs that tell about the nature and culture of the area. Additionally, several lookout and rest areas have been arranged along the hiking trail.
